Global System for Mobile communication is a digital cell phone system from 1991. GSM is especially widespread in Scandinavia. It can send data at 9,600 bps. However there are high-speed editions that can transmit data at 28,8 and 56 kbps, but that is done by bundling more phone lines together. Please also see NMT and GPRS.
