Application Program Interface. A specific program layer in Windows which all other programs "writes to." A library of commands which allows the programmer to control the PC hardware in Windows.

The API hides the hardware from the programmer, who just needs to write a standard Windows program. Microsoft guarantees that the program will work on any PC, as long as it conforms to the API user interface.
